NC Division of Public Health Celebrates a 4th Wave of QI Training

Please join us in congratulating the Wave C participants of the DPH QI 101 Training Program: Human Resources, Office of Rural Health and Community Care, On-Site Water Protection Branch, and the Women’s Health Branch. Utilizing funding from the National Public Health Improvement Initiative, the Center for Public Health Quality CPHQ conducted its fourth wave of QI training within the NC DPH in September 2013.  The program participants set forth to make improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of the programs and services they provide internally to fellow Division staff and externally to the many public health agencies and citizens they serve.

On May 20th, the NC DPH and CPHQ hosted the 4th Annual DPH QI Poster Session and Celebration highlighting the great work and results of these four teams.

Like many Waves of QI training, the teams’ projects yielded lessons learned and great accomplishments. The Human Resources team reduced the time it takes to fill vacant permanent positions by streamlining the hiring process. The team has reduced the time for filling a vacant permanent position from an average of 134 days to 56 days. The Office of Rural Health and Community Care increased the efficiency and effectiveness of their contract monitoring process by reducing the number of contract monitoring templates used from 6 to 2 and reducing the average amount of time to complete a risk assessment from 20 minutes to only 1 minute. The Women’s Health Branch supported high quality implementation of the Pregnancy Care Management program by streamlining the dissemination of data from the Community Care of North Carolina to local health departments. The On-Site Water Protection Branch worked with local environmental health departments to standardize an internal quality assurance monitoring process for county level on-site water protection programs.

Teams are currently in the process of measuring improvements, finalizing return on investment calculations and implementing plans to sustain their improvements.  Be sure to show your appreciation and support for these teams as they continue making and sustaining improvements.
