NC Public Health System Develops More Quality Improvement Advisors

The fourth cohort of the Quality Improvement Advisor (QIA) program is well underway and just hosted a hands-on workshop on September 24-26th.  In the interactive learning program designed to train state and local health department staff, QIAs learn valuable, practical techniques to support QI within their organization and assist leaders with creating a CQI culture and infrastructure.  The curriculum includes faculty instruction, peer-to-peer learning, self-directed learning and mentoring.

“The workshop was a great mixture of lecture and hands-on material,” said a QIA program participant.  “I feel better prepared to begin facilitating and coaching.”

Participants continued to learn more QI tools and methods and foster their skills in sharing their QI knowledge with others.  They also learned about the three phases of a Kaizen event, an on-site rapid cycle improvement event, and how to facilitate one of their own through simulation activities.  Participants particularly enjoyed the hand-on simulation demonstrations that allowed them to put into practice the tools they were learning.  Participants said these sessions were “a fabulous exercise” and “one of the best parts of the workshop.”

The QIA Program creates a network of individuals that have a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and experience with proven methods of QI and continuous quality improvement (CQI) implementation.  Going forward, the QIAs will continue to receive QI support and facilitation help from CPHQ, as well as other QIAs through an ongoing learning network.
